Every year, the IPM team chooses a charity to support through the awards. We do this by donating £5 per entry.
Last year, we raised more than £4,000 for The Confucius Foundation. This year we hope to raise even more for The Sharpe Children’s Foundation.
We chose The Confucius Foundation last year because of its connections to overcoming counterfeiting as well as caring for children.
We have chosen Sharpe’s Children this year, not only because it also focuses on caring for and educating children but also because of its innovative use of a well-established intellectual asset.
The Sharpe’s Children Foundation – Actors taking Action, was inspired by the success and global following of the long running Sharpe television series and the 23 best-selling Sharpe novels by author Bernard Cornwell.
Launched in 2010, the foundation grew from the vision of actor Daragh O’Malley who plays the redoubtable Sergeant Patrick Harper. It cleverly aims to exploit the established Sharpe brand to build awareness of the foundation and to raise funding to support the primary education of at risk and marginalized orphaned children in various locations around the world.
While filming the Sharpe series over a seventeen year timespan at various locations in Portugal, Ukraine, Crimea,Turkey and India the actors of Sharpe witnessed many atrocities against children. While filming Sharpe’s Challenge and Sharpe’s Peril in India, actors witnessed little children living in the gutters of Jaipur and Jodpur in Rajasthan and on the streets of Kahjurho in the state of Madhya Pradesh, living in the most horrific circumstances.
The Foundation’s focus is the erection of residential early education centres, ‘Sharpe’s Shelters’ in India and other select countries, predominantly places where Daragh O’Malley and his colleagues have seen at first hand the impact of deprivation.
Sharpe’s Shelters are residential early education schools that provide a comprehensive primary education for orphaned and destitute children between the ages of 5-12 in a secure, happy and healthy environment.
“Freedom to starve is no freedom at all, Sir.”
