Allan Feldman

Allan has more than 30 years of experience in marketing and management, including over 20 years in brand extension licensing. Prior to forming LMCA in 1985, he served as director of operations planning for Continental Group, group vice president for Chromalloy America, director of new business ventures for Rockwell International and special assistant to the director general of Rank-Xerox Benelux, the overseas arm of Xerox Corporation.

Allan is a member of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) and International Trademark Association (INTA). He serves on committees of INTA and LES and was a board member of the Licensing Industry Merchants Association (LIMA), the Intellectual Property Management Institute and the advisory board of The Licensing Journal. Allan is a frequent speaker on trademark licensing, strategy and brand building at conferences, seminars and trade shows in North America, Europe and Asia. His industry articles have been widely published.

Allan earned an MBA from the University of Chicago, and studied at the University of Louvain in Belgium and at the London School of Economics

 

Andrew Browne Senior IP Counsel, Shell International BV

Andrew Browne

Andrew Browne is Senior IP Counsel with Shell International BV and Chair of the Forum of In-House IP Managers, UK.  Andrew has significant experience in IP commercialisation with regards to closing R&D and IP deals on a global scale with major global corporates, R&D institutes, Governments and universities.

He is also known for developing and implementing commercially-driven IP strategies and policies for effective IP capture, management, implementation, exploitation, enforcement, and freedom to operate.

Andrew is also a regular presenter on international patent protection strategies, effective IP management, IP audits, and cost saving management tools across the piece.

 

Brett Azuma Managing Director, Ovum

Brett Azuma is the Head of Ovum.  This unit includes analysis and consulting in Telecoms and IT.  Ovum’s IT Research is uniquely positioned to provide business led technology research and analysis to both enterprises and vendors.  Ovum’s Telecoms Research is the leading research and analysis firm covering the Telecom marketplace.  In addition to leading this group, he leads research efforts in areas such as application development, service innovation, and operational agility.

Previously, Brett was President of Ovum US, Ovum US Sales Vice President, and R&A Director for Ovum Telecoms.  Brett also headed RHK Research and led its successful integration into Ovum.

Brett has 25 years of experience in marketing, engineering, sales, and operations.  Brett spent five years at Gartner, in roles such as Chief Analyst, Group Vice President, and Chief Research Officer for Gartner G2. During this tenure, Brett successfully integrated NBI research into the Dataquest and integrated Inteco, a UK based consumer research company into Gartner G2.  Brett led the marketing and sales efforts for a start-up called IP Unity. This role additionally involved the acquisition of EmpowerTel. Brett also held a wide range of positions within Pacific Bell.

 

Christopher Nicholson Board Director, Lead Telecoms Equity Analyst at ORACA Independent Equity Research.

Christopher Nicholson

Christopher is the founder and a director of ORACA Independent Equity Research and of a new firm, ACF Equity Research. ORACA has been running for over 11 years. Christopher has covered EMEA large cap to pre-listed TMT (Telecoms/Media/Technology) equities for over 12 years and has analysed over 100 companies. He has a verifiable annual call record (identifying correct valuations) running between 60% and 80% over the last 9 years.  He spends his professional life attempting to apply financial and social value to the innovations of others.  ORACA is not in of itself an FSA regulated business, however Christopher is personally registered with the FSA under Hoyt Moxon Capital Limited.

Christopher trained as an analyst at Legg Mason Investors, US based international fund management group and has since been head of Technology and Media Equity Research at Bryan Garnier, a pan-European investment bank and brokerage.  He is also on the Steering Group of The Communications Group, a City based not for profit body that draws together experts from diverse backgrounds through a series of regular presentations and events examining current and cutting edge issues in the TMT space.

He broadcasts and writes regularly in the leading pan-European and international media including Bloomberg Television, BBC Radio 4, the Financial Times and a range of trade journals and European language media on an increasingly broad range of topics. He is often first call for expert analysis in these media.

He studied Biochemistry at Kings, Economics at LSE and speaks English, French and German.

By way of recreation he plays cricket regularly the Stock Exchange Cricket Club and has served on the Committee.  He also rides, enjoys skiing, film, reading, writing and gardening as and when time allows.

 

Dr Claude Kaplan IP Pragmatics

Claude Kaplan

Dr Claude Kaplan has over 14 years experience in commercializing Intellectual Property from multinationals, SMEs, government research institutes and universities across UK, EU, US, China, Japan and New Zealand. He currently leads the IP Consultancy business for the London based IP asset management company, IP Pragmatics.

His specific focus is on the commercialisation of IP in Agro-biotechnology, In-Vitro Diagnostics and Life Science Research sectors. He has successfully launched and run 2 spin-outs from UK research institutes; one in animal diagnostics and one in infectious disease diagnostics. For the past 2 years Claude has been seconded to UK Trade and Investment to support their work in encouraging the top 100 R&D intensive multinational companies from around the world to collaborate with and invest in the UK science base.

He holds a MA & PhD from University of Cambridge in Biochemistry and professional qualifications in law, human resources & marketing. He gained his industrial experience with Unilever and TTP.

Dr Frederick Mostert International Trademark Association

Dr Frederick Mostert

Dr Mostert is Past President of the International Trademark Association, a Guest Professor at Peking University, a Visiting Professor of University College London and a Fellow of the London School of Economics. He serves on the Advisory Board of the McCarthy Institute for Intellectual Property and Technology Law.He has written widely on intellectual property and is principal author and editor of Famous and Well-known Marks – An International Analysis. He has also authored “From Edison to iPod – Protect Your Ideas”, and “International Trademark Treaties & Agreements”.

Elizabeth Gutteridge Partner, Deloitte

Elizabeth Gutteridge

Elizabeth Gutteridge is a partner in Deloitte’s Corporate Finance team.  She leads Deloitte’s Forensic Intellectual Property (“IP”) team and regularly values IP rights, advising in licensing and competition disputes.  She has extensive experience in quantifying damages arising from the infringement of IP rights and regularly undertakes accounting and factual investigations for IP-based clients.

She has been appointed as an expert witness and has given oral evidence in the High Court as well as in confidential international arbitration and mediation hearings.Elizabeth is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.  She holds the Professional Certificate in International IP Law from Oxford University and the University of Victoria.  She has an MA in Modern and Medieval Languages from Cambridge University.  Elizabeth also sits on the CBI’s IP Committee.

Erik Alsegård is a Senior IP Underwriter with Corporate Insurance Partner, a division of Great Lakes Reinsurance (UK) Plc (a group company of Munich Re). Gerhard Bauer Chief Trademark Counsel, Daimler

Gerhard Bauer

Mr. Gerhard Bauer is Head of the Trademark, Design-Patent, Domainname and IP-Agreement department of Daimler AG within the Intellectual Property Management Group. He is based in the Stuttgart headquarter.

Mr. Gerhard Bauer is Vice-President of the International Trademark Association (INTA) in New York. He is a frequent speaker worldwide for IP-matters and especially trademark matters for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and various other organisations; he gave many presentations especially in Latin American as well as Asian countries and China.

Jean-Pierre Maeder Group Head of Brand IP, Nestlé

Jean-Pierre Maeder

Jean-Pierre is Group Head of Brand IP at Nestlé, based in Vevey/Switzerland, where he has worldwide responsibilities for trademarks, designs, copyright, internet/domain names/social media and counterfeits. He joined Nestlé in November 2000.

Prior to that Jean-Pierre spent 8 years as Director Intellectual Property for Kraft Foods in Zürich, where he had responsibility for all of Kraft’s trademarks and non-technical intellectual property rights in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia/Oceania.

Before joining Kraft Foods Jean-Pierre worked as an in-house counsel for a Swiss based Telecommunication and a High-Tech company where he was handling licensing projects and other commercial legal issues.

Jean-Pierre holds a Law Degree from the University of Berne, Switzerland and is a qualified attorney admitted to the bar. In 1991 he participated to a Program for Executive Development at IMD Lausanne/Switzerland. He joined MARQUES Council in February 2005. Jean-Pierre is also a Council member of the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property since January 2005.

 

Jeremy Phillips Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice (JIPLP)

Jeremy Phillips

Originally a career academic, holding posts at Trinity College Dublin, Durham University and the University of London, Jeremy has an active interest in intellectual property publishing. He was the first full-time editor of Trademark World and the titles he has launched include Managing Intellectual Property, Patent World and Copyright World. He currently edits the Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice for Oxford University Press and the European Trade Mark Reports for Sweet & Maxwell.  A Professorial Fellow at the Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute and Honorary Research Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute, Jeremy was Intellectual Property Consultant to Slaughter and May from 1994 to 2007, when he took up the same position with the IP-driven London-based law firm Olswang LLP.  He is blogmeister of the IPKat weblog and a suite of other intellectual property weblogs.

Mr Calvert regularly participates in UK-based IP initiatives with other members and presents to LES, the Chartered Instituteof Patent Attorneys and other leading industry bodies.

Most recently, Mr Calvert co-founded the International IP Strategists Association (INTIPSA) with the intention of promoting IP strategyand best practice in industry.

 

 

Kelvin King founder, Valuation Consulting

Kelvin King

Kelvin joined the Government in 1970. His early career was spent with the Government’s Share Valuation; which is responsible for all of the private company, business, intellectual property, and intangible asset valuation requirements of Government.

He left the Government after 17 years to establish a Valuation Unit for a large accountancy practice and, before the founding of Valuation Consulting, www.valuation-consulting.co.uk , now a BNP Paribas company, was the MD of a specialist valuation company within a major international Swiss bank. He has undertaken corporate finance work most of his working life.

As well as founding the Society of Share and Business Valuers in the UK he is a contributor to many journals, television and radio. He is a contributor to books (Business Valuation Digest – Thomson, Intellectual Property Rights and Their Valuation – Gresham, Due Diligence Law and Practice – Sweet & Maxwell, The Trademark Handbook amongst others).   His book Valuation and Exploitation of Intellectual Property and Intangible Assets was published by EMIS Professional Publishing in May 2003. Kevin has been the Group Legal Director of Fabergé since its inception in 2007 when the current owners purchased the brand from Unilever. Originally a trade mark specialist, Kevin has branched into other areas of commercial and corporate law. He formally ran his own IP consulting business and was Head of IP and Acting Head of Legal at RHM where he managed the protection of well known English food brands such as Hovis, Mr Kipling, Bisto and Sharwoods. He has worked for City firms Field Fisher Waterhouse and Clifford Chance.Kevin enjoys the challenge of providing a solid legal platform for the re-launch of an iconic brand such as Fabergé and being close to the heart of the business.In his spare time he writes short stories and tears round London on his Harley Davidson.”

Nancy Cronin Principal Partner, ipCapital Group

Nancy Edwards Cronin is a Principal Partner of ipCG. With more than 15 years of consulting experience, Nancy serves as an advisor to companies that wish to maximize value using IP, optimize the use of IP in product/service development and business transactions, establish strategic IP positions against competitors, and implement intellectual asset management (IAM) programs. She focuses her efforts in industries such as energy and environmental technology, chemical manufacturing, consumer products, electronics, construction and building materials, medical devices, printing, and semiconductors.

Prior to joining ipCapital Group, Nancy was a senior environmental engineer for Montgomery Watson (MW), an international engineering consulting firm. Her focus at MW included innovative and remedial technologies and knowledge management. Prior to her employment at Montgomery Watson, Nancy worked for several other international engineering consulting firms, including Radian Corporation, ERM, and Camp Dresser McKee.

Nancy received a BS in Engineering and Applied Science from the California Institute of Technology, and an MS in Engineering Science from Harvard University. Nancy is a Professional Engineer (PE) licensed in Environmental Engineering. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Caltech Alumni Association and a member of the Licensing Executive Society.

 

Ron Laurie Managing Director, Inflexion Point Strategy

Ron Laurie is the Managing Director of Inflexion Point Strategy, LLC, the first intellectual property investment bank, which he co-founded in 2004. Inflexion Point represents technology companies and financial investors in bringing the unrealized value of high-quality IP assets to the bottom line by increasing corporate valuation in M&A transactions, by building a defensive patent shield against litigious competitors and by generating additional top-line revenue via creative exclusive field-of-use licensing programs.  Ron is also a principal in Percipience, LLC, a board-level advisory firm focused on IP strategy, competitive intelligence, focused innovation and patent valuation.  Ron has worked in Silicon Valley since before it had that name, initially as a software engineer and then as an IP lawyer focusing on IP strategy, a subject he has taught at Stanford and Boalt law schools.  Ron was a founding partner of the Silicon Valley offices of Skadden Arps, Weil Gotshal, and Irell & Manella. The focus of Ron’s prior legal practice was on the strategic use of IP assets in complex business transactions such as mergers and acquisitions, technology spin-outs, joint ventures, and strategic alliances, and he led IP teams in some of the largest technology deals ever done, worth over $50 billion in the aggregate.  Ron is a registered patent attorney and has authored a number of landmark patents including the Priceline “reverse-auction” patent which was the first Internet business method patent to attract national attention.

Roy P. D’Souza Managing Director, Ocean Tomo's Valuation Practice

Roy P. D’Souza is a Managing Director responsible for leading Ocean Tomo’s Valuation practice. Mr. D’Souza’s work has focused on valuations of intangible and tangible assets for financial reporting, tax matters, merger and acquisition planning, litigations, financing and general business planning. Mr. D’Souza also has experience performing overall business valuations and debt and equity valuations. Industries in which he has experience include numerous segments in light and heavy manufacturing (e.g., pulp/paper, automotive, plastics), energy/utilities (power generation, electric and natural gas transmission and distribution), and computer software and hardware.

Prior to Ocean Tomo, Mr. D’Souza led a corporate services valuation practice and spent a major portion of his career in public accounting, first at Coopers & Lybrand LLP and then KPMG LLP, where he was a Senior Manager in their State and Local Tax practice and then acted as the Midwest Director for all tangible asset and energy/utility industry valuation services.

Mr. D’Souza is a Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation and has successfully completed Machinery & Technical Specialties coursework (MTS 201 – 203) through the American Society of Appraisers. He is a Graduate of DePaul University, with a BS in Finance,Minor in Accounting.
